Birds of Bangalore
Summary
Birds of Bangalore is a visual nonlinear interactive interface which can be installed in public spaces, museums etc. It provides the information about different groups of birds in Bangalore city premises and their level of extinction at a glance so that user don't have to spend more time. The project was done as part of the introduction to interaction design module to get an understanding about information architecture and to design an interface.

Description
Birds belong to the family Aves which is further categorized into different orders based on their morphology. Comparisons of their beak shape, foot shape, feathers, and flying abilities have been used to classify them into about 29 orders. Bangalore which is changing from 'garden city' to the 'IT capital' of the country has 22 orders of birds and various species under that. Many of the species have already extinct. Their level of extinction is denoted by their IUCN status. This visual narrative is helpful for the one who wants to know about birds in Bangalore and their level of extinction. The orders of birds in Bangalore are further categorized into 7 groups based on the Morphology and the environment they live in for easiness. So that one who has the basic knowledge about birds also can easily find the order they belong and their IUCN status effortlessly. This narrative makes people aware of the need for the protection of those birds which under severe threat of extinction. This display in public spaces is also a knowledge game for children to identify the birds.
-
Reduce the effort by displaying visual information so that it reduces time for user spends on the interface.
-
Provide access to more information with less effort.
-
Give a playful feel while getting information.
-
Provide multiple information without complicated searches by using better UI elements.
Objectives
Data collection and Analysis
The data was collected from various sites and orders of birds existing in Bangalore were explored and species coming under each were listed. The International Union for Conservation of Nature status of each species was found out separately. They were plotted and organized using the MS excel application.
Data Categorisation and visualisation
22 orders of birds were further categorized into 7 groups based on some of their characteristics, morphology, and the environment they dwell. Any of the heavy-bodied ground-feeding birds were grouped as Land fowls, Waterfowl are birds that are accustomed to and spend a substantial amount of time in the water. Shorebirds are birds commonly found along sandy or rocky shorelines, mudflats, and shallow waters. Birds that primarily hunt and feed on vertebrates that are large relative to the hunter are called raptors. Raptors that are principally active during the daytime are diurnal raptors and those during the night are nocturnal raptors. Parrots are birds of all colors that usually originate from a warm habitat — think rainforests, grasslands, savannas, etc. Those birds which can stand, sit, or rest on an elevated place or position and not included in any of the above categories are called Perching birds.

Major controls are the dial for selecting the group and a toggle bar for choosing the IUCN status. There will be another sublayer to the dial for grouping the species belonging to that category into orders.
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plant and animal species. It uses a set of quantitative criteria to evaluate the extinction risk of thousands of species. There are 7 categories under the red list.
The background of the pages was designed in such a way that it matches with the environment where the category belongs.
